Broker's Comments

The Vortex 47 was designed by Arthur Mursell of TT Boat Designs, who were themselves responsible for all the well-respected Nelson hulls produced. Based on the Nelson 46, the already fantastic sea-keeping capabilities of the Nelson hull were further enhanced by incorporating design features patented by Roland Paxton, the Canadian marine architect. Not least was an increase in beam from the somewhat narrow-gutted standard hull (if I may dare say so!). Another striking feature of the hull is its relatively flat fuel consumption per nautical mile, irrespective of speed. In other words she can cruise all day at 10%-15% off maximum revs (to ‘ease’ the engines a bit) without feeling that you are paying a penalty in fuel consumption. Strongly built originally and since completely refitted to an exceptionally high standard she is a highly capable offshore cruiser with a huge inventory for both safety and comfort.

There is no sign that her hull was built in 1992, and the remarkable thing about her machinery, plumbing, electrics, instrumentation and interior is that almost all of it has been renewed. Between June 2005 and February 2009 some £135,700 (plus VAT) was spent, with a further £639,100 (plus VAT) between February 2011 and May 2015. The latter includes £43,900 (plus VAT) with East Coast Diesels having the two engines rebuilt to ‘zero-hour’ standard, and £17,800 (plus VAT) just on windows and hatches. In all close to £1m was spent on the two refits if you include VAT!

Since then in her current ownership she has been maintained meticulously by a local yard and there are numerous upgrades, again all receipted. This includes the addition of Zipwake Dynamic trim tabs giving her an extra ½ knot in speed (which doesn’t seem possible!), a smooth flatter ride through the water, and some roll reduction – with a noticeable increase in on-board comfort.

On deck she is solid, with well-placed stainless grab rails that take you all the way up to the foredeck. The cockpit/aft deck area gives you a great dining or seating area, shaded from sun or fully enclosed. Both upper and lower helm positions are fully equipped with modern navigational aids

Down below she feels extremely bright and open. The upper saloon is light and comfortable, the galley and lower saloon are well laid out for use at sea or in port and the master cabin aft is fantastic. A large double island berth with plenty of space around, storage throughout and a good sized en-suite gives it a luxurious feel that I really liked. The forward cabin has two single berths, again light and bright and lots of storage, and the dinette converts to make two more bunks if required.

In summary, she is a handsome looking, well designed, well-built sea boat with all the modern comforts and safety equipment you need aboard for extended cruising. Viewing is highly recommended to appreciate just what she is.
